In the Contrada Buonavini of Noto, Sicily, situated between the Ionian Sea and the Sicilian Strait, is the project of Pierpaolo Messina. Pierpaolo is a young and extremely talented winemaker who dedicated his life in 2002 to changing the reputation of the territory he grew up in. He takes a parcel-to-parcel approach in his viticulture by dividing his property into almost 20 plots according to the history of the estate. Attention to every detail in the vineyard and rigorously adhering to his own versions of organic and biodynamic farming creates unmistakable purity in the fruit that is presented fully in the wine through his deft hand in the cellar. If you want wines that tell you where they are from and who made them, look no further than the wines of Marabino.

The Rosso di Contrada is made from estate-grown Nero d’Avola, cultivated in limestone-rich soils that enhance its freshness and complexity. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in neutral vessels, this wine offers a pure and vibrant expression of the variety. It presents aromas of wild berries, violets, and Mediterranean spices, leading to a lively, medium-bodied palate with fine tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish.

Marabino

Pierpaolo Messina is simply a genius. Young, with a zest for life and a desire to push boundaries (with the privilege to be able to risk), he’s achieved things that most others simply could not. Every few minutes he’s cracking a joke to the point where you would wonder if he’s really serious about winemaking. But all it takes is a casual walk through the vineyards with him and it’s like taking a masterclass on biodynamics, history, geography, geology and winemaking. He’s partnered with the University of Catania to design a 3 pit watersystem to recycle gray water which becomes a lagoon of fresh water to attract birds, insects and animals. His wines are different, refined, and elegant and that’s what we love.
