In the center of the Renaissance town of Montepulciano, the Contucci family has been making wines of place since 1800. The deepest section of the cellar at the Contucci Palace is from the year 1000, which is around the time the family estimates their ancestors first began living in Montepulciano. At Roscioli, we are drawn to their wines as each bottle exudes a history of familial knowledge passed down for generations in order to make a perfect blend using only the local grapes.

Pietrarossa is a single-vineyard selection from Contucci, sourced from a distinct parcel in Montepulciano characterized by red, iron-rich soils — the “red stone” that gives the wine its name. Compared to the base Nobile, Pietrarossa shows greater depth and focus, shaped by the character of this specific site rather than by blending across multiple parcels.

Contucci

Palazzo Contucci is where the family has lived since the Renaissance and has been making wine for more than a thousand years. Today Adamo Contucci and his relatives carry forward this lineage, guardians of the noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Their vineyards spread at about 400–450 meters above sea level, cultivated with Sangiovese—here called Prugnolo Gentile—alongside smaller parcels of Canaiolo and Colorino. Farming is careful and respectful of tradition, harvests are by hand, and fermentations take place with native yeasts, followed by long aging in large Slavonian oak casks.
