Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese

A Culonna by Scirto is a compelling blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, grown in the volcanic soils of Mount Etna from vines which reach over 100 years old. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in large oak casks, in a very garagiste setting, resulting in a wine with vibrant acidity and structured tannins. Valeria and Giuseppe Scirto, artisans passionate about organic farming and natural winemaking, ensure that each bottle of A Culonna reflects the unique terroir of their vineyards. This wine embodies the bold and dynamic character of the volcanic landscape, making it a distinctive representation of Etna’s winemaking tradition.

Scirto

Giuseppe Scirto and Valeria Franco chose not to sell the family’s vineyards when others did—they chose to honor them. From their high-altitude terraces of black volcanic sand of Etna, at 600–1,000 meters, they tend century-old vines of Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and more—with minimal intervention, no chemistry, and a fierce love for the land. In the cellar, wines are shaped in steel and large oak, following intuition rather than rule.
