Rosso Matò is Valter Mattoni’s most ambitious and rarest wine, made from Alicante, the local expression of Grenache that has long been part of the Piceno countryside. The 2021 is rich and deep, with ripe red fruit, Mediterranean herbs and spice, but there is freshness underneath that keeps the wine moving. Time in wood gives it structure without hiding the fruit, while the tannins remain soft and integrated. A warm, generous wine with a distinctly Mediterranean character, produced in very small quantities and made to take its time, both in the cellar and in the glass.

Valter Mattoni

In the gentle hills of Castorano (Marche), Valter Mattoni—known as “La Roccia” for his unshakable devotion—tends just a few hectares inherited from generations who believed that water should only ever be washed off the face, not swallowed. Surrounded by vineyards of Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and ancient Bordò (local Grenache), he farms with quiet reverence for time and place. His wines—Arshura, Rossobordò, Trebbien, Cosecose, Quiss—are born from spontaneous fermentations, aged in barriques, and bottled in small batches.
